In October 2003, he became the first person sent into space by the Chinese space program. This mission, Shenzhou 5, made China the third country to independently send humans into space. He is currently a vice chief designer of China Manned Space Engineering.

Il s'agit d'une traduction du terme chinois 太空人, de tàikōng : « espace » et rén : « homme ». Ce terme n'est toutefois pas employé en chinois, où les astronautes sont en fait appelés 宇航员 (yǔháng yuán), « membre de l'aérospatiale ».
